Safe Access to Energy and Fuel (SAFE+2) project in #Rohingya Camps
13 December 2023
When Rohingya refugees first arrived in Bangladesh in 2017, they collected 3-5 football fields of forest for firewood daily to cook and to survive. Since 2018, collective reforestation efforts and the provision of cooking fuel to all refugee households through the Safe Access to Energy & Fuel programme, now known as SAFE+2, have helped restore 200 hectares of forest land, while reducing 400,000 tons of CO2 emissions reduced annually. SAFE+2 is an interagency collaboration between FAO, IOM, UNHCR and WFP — a shining example of UN agencies working together to solve urgent problems and enhance the dignity, well-being & resilience of refugees and local Bangladeshis. Learn more about the results and impacts of the collaboration in a new video from partners in Cox's Bazar.
