Economic Relations Division Signs Three Technical Assistance Project Agreements with IOM

The Economic Relations Division (ERD) of the Ministry of Finance signs three grant agreements worth USD 2.07 million with the International Organization for Migration (IOM). These agreements will facilitate orderly, safe and regular migration and strengthen the capacity of relevant Ministries and Government agencies in this regard.

The three projects include the “Displacement Tracking and Evidence for Migration Analysis and Policy in Asia (DATA)" project, the “Asia Regional Migration Program” and “Diaspora for Climate Action project”.

The Financial Agreements for these crucial projects  were officially signed by Md. Shahriar Kader Siddiky, Secretary, ERD and Abdusattor Esoev, Chief of Mission, IOM. The Signing Ceremony was moderated by A.K.M. Sohel Wing Chief, UN Wing.

The DATA project funded by the European Union, leverages the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) to strengthen evidence-based policy formulation and implementation in close collaboration with the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics.  

The Asia Regional Migration Program supported by the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (PRM) of the State Department of the United State of America will support the Government of Bangladesh, particularly the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, through capacity building initiatives and technical assistance on safe and regular migration and protection of migrants as well as in the implementation of planned and well-managed migration policies.

Bangladesh has a significant diaspora population across the globe, particularly in the United Kingdom who have formed different associations and platforms. Through the global Diaspora for Climate Action project, IOM in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change(MoEFCC), aims to engage the diaspora of Albania, Ghana, Jamaica and Bangladesh in the UK with the relevant stakeholders in their respective countries of origin to address the challenges of climate change and leverage the potential for developmental efforts.

Md. Shahriar Kader Siddiky, ERD Secretary speaking at the event stated that the Government of Bangladesh is looking forward to seeing the positive outcomes of these interventions and emphasized  the need to ensure that there is  continuity and sustainability.  

Abdusattor Esoev expressed his gratitude to the Government of Bangladesh for advancing these projects which will contribute to support in promoting safe and regular migration, forge partnerships with Bangladesh diaspora to address the effects of climate induced migration, and focus on evidence based policy formulation in line with the priorities identified by the Government.  

IOM will initiate the implementation of these projects which are fully aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), specifically Target 10.7 facilitating orderly, safe and regular migration and the 8th Five Year Plan of the Government of Bangladesh.
