Policy Brief on Violence Against Women in Politics

Violence against women in politics (VAWP) in Bangladesh affects women’s political participation, representation, and leadership. Based on qualitative research conducted with women politicians, candidates, and party members at both local and national levels, this brief documents multiple forms of VAWP across electoral, party, institutional, and digital spaces, perpetrated by a range of actors. These forms rarely occur in isolation; rather, they intersect to create a pervasive climate of fear and exclusion that pressures women to self-censor, withdraw from politics, or remain silent about abuse. This vulnerability is further compounded by weak recognition, ineffective or absent grievance mechanisms, and intersecting forms of marginalization, leaving many women without effective protection or redress. 

The brief proposes key steps for the Election Commission (EC), political parties, law enforcement agencies, public administration, and other relevant actors to recognize and measure VAWP, strengthen prevention systems, establish safe complaint and referral mechanisms, address technology-facilitated violence, and ensure protection and redress for women with intersecting identities.
