Honoring Peacekeepers from Bangladesh & around the World
29 May 2024
Since 2003, the world has observed May 29th as the International Day for UN Peacekeepers. This day serves a dual purpose: to honor the fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives for peace, and to recognize the ongoing dedication and courage of people serving in UN Peacekeeping Operations (UNPKO).
Bangladesh, an active UN member and one of the top Troop Contributing Country (TCC), proudly observes this day in solidarity with global peace efforts. Maintaining global peace and security is a core principle of the UN Charter, with peacekeeping evolving as a key tool for achieving this goal.
Traditionally associated with Chapter VI of the Charter, UNPKO has expanded its scope to encompass Chapters VII and VIII, adapting to the demands of complex conflicts. From providing security to fostering fragile institutions, UN peacekeepers deployed under Security Council mandates offer crucial support during war-torn periods. However, it is well-understood that peacekeeping is a collaborative process, requiring additional efforts beyond conflict resolution.
For over 76 years, UN peacekeeping has strived to save lives and foster peace in the world's most fragile situations, upholding such values and work ethics. Over two million personnel have served since 1948, helping nations transition from war to peace. Currently, more than 70,000 peacekeepers serve in eleven missions worldwide.
UN peacekeeping initially focused on inter-state conflicts but has increasingly addressed internal conflicts and civil wars. This transformation saw the integration of non-military personnel alongside the military backbone. Administrators, police officers, election observers, and humanitarian workers now contribute to the multidimensional and complex nature of these operations.
Constantly evolving, UN peacekeeping continues to adapt to new challenges and realities. Bangladesh, a valuable partner since entering the UNPKO in the second generation (1988), has demonstrated this commitment. Bangladeshi troops have served in several missions across the globe, in Cambodia, Somalia, DRC, Sierra Leone, Côte d'Ivoire, Liberia, and Sudan to name a few.
The 2024 theme, "Fit for the Future: Building Better Together," highlights the invaluable contributions of military, police, and civilian peacekeepers over the past seven decades. It encapsulates the spirit of progress, paramount importance of linking the work to the values enshrined in the UN Charter, strengthening collective action towards a more equal, just, and sustainable world.
In Bangladesh, the day is being commemorated through various events: peacekeeper rallies had taken place, followed by commemorations for fallen and injured peacekeepers. Special articles have been published in newspapers and journals; and talk shows are being aired on national channels to raise awareness about the importance of peacekeeping.
On this occasion, our resident coordinator in Bangladesh, Gwyn Lewis, stated: “The 2024 theme - Fit for the Future, Building Better Together – is a reminder that Peacekeeping requires the consent of host governments and the support of regional and international partners to address today's complex peace and security challenges. Peacekeepers must build strong relationships, based on empathy and mutual respect, with local communities, women and youth, civil society, humanitarian organizations, and governments. We rely on these relationships to resolve tensions, support reconciliation, and build peace.”
Moving forward, Bangladesh's peacekeeping forces while continuously adapting must strengthen performance in terms of improving technical skills and an understanding of UN values. In addition to training, technology, and performance, ensuring adequate working conditions will be crucial for guaranteeing the safety and security of peacekeepers.
Bangladesh's commitment to UN peacekeeping is a testament to its dedication to global peace. As the world continues to face complex challenges, the country's contributions will remain crucial in building a more peaceful and secure future.
