Our Common Agenda Policy Brief 9 : A New Agenda for Peace
A New Agenda for Peace represents the UN Secretary-General’s vision of how to strengthen multilateral action for peace in a world in transition. It is one of several policy briefs submitted by Secretary the -General for Member State consideration ahead of the Summit of the Future in September 2024. This brief offers a clear-eyed analysis of today’s geopolitical landscape and how the world order is shifting. It notes that global power dynamics have become increasingly fragmented as new poles of influence emerge, new economic blocs form, and axes of contestation are redefined, with greater competition among major powers and a loss of trust between the global North and the global South. It outlines evolving threats – including the changing conflict landscape; persistent violence outside of conflict environments; the potential weaponization of new technologies; rising inequalities; shrinking civic space; and the climate emergency – and emphasizes how violations of the United Nations Charter and a pushback against human rights, in particular women’s rights, represent a significant normative challenge.
